Any-Body Month Preview – What is Wheelchair Basketball?

Posted on: March 16, 2010

Following its success at the disability awareness day last year, wheelchair basketball will be making another appearance at the Any-Body Month event this Wednesday (17th March) at the Jubilee Sports Centre.

Come along and try wheelchair basketball at Jubilee SC this week.

Wheelchair basketball is considered to be one of the blue ribbon events at the Paralympics. It’s been around since the 1940’s and was originally developed as a rehabilitation and recreational activity for people with spinal cord injuries.

Now you can play it competitively, with around 65 teams playing throughout the country, with able bodied players eligible to play in the top 4 divisions and also the women’s league.

If like me, you’re a newbie to this game, then you’ll need to start with learning some of the basic skills which include;

• Chair control;

• Ball control ;

• Dribbling – including 2 pushes 1 bounce and continuous dribbling;

• Passing – including hand passes, chest passes and feed off passes ;

• Shooting – including lay-ups and hook shots;

• Catching

My sources tell me that this sport takes practice, but if it’s anything like the wheelchair rugby last week, it’s going to be fun and a little bit competitive!

If you need further inspiration, check out Ade Adepitan’s guide to the game: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/disability_sport/7605947.stm

There are 2 wheelchair basketball sessions on Wednesday: 3- 4pm and 4 – 5pm. If you want further information on it please email me at: Hannah.webber@nottingham.ac.uk  Thanks!
