Sheriffs Win Silver in Novices Goalball Competition

Posted on: May 24, 2011

The Nottinghamshire Sherrifs Goalball Club competed in their third ever novices competition this weekend in York and came away with a well earned silver medal.

For those of you who don’t know what Goalball is – here’s a bit of an explanation….

Goalball is a Paralympic sport which was designed for visually impaired people. It’s a three a side game, where the players have to compete with blacked out goggles on and a ball with a bell in it. You play on a court which is marked out with taped down string and the aim is to get the ball in the oppositions net. One rule that I discovered was very difficult to stick to was the fact that you’re not able to even touch your goggles during the game, let alone take them off.

So now to details of the competition…The Sherrifs team which is made up of members from the University of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind and people from the local community, competed against five other teams in York.

The Sheriffs team - Faye, Phil, Shamaila and Hannah

We were in a group against home team York and Moor End B from Huddersfield. Despite some early nerves and a few penalties against us, we took the first game against York by 8 – 2. Shamaila who was playing centre, showed some real determination and agility to ensure that as few goals as possible were conceded.

Next up were Moor End B, whose centre definitely tested the Sherrifs team mettle, scoring some great goals. Despite a close score at half time, we pushed on through using the power of fearless Phil to score, winning 9 -3.

By this point the team were buzzing, especially Faye, who was a relative newby to the game. Our challenge for game three was to beat the team from Bury. They had obviously been doing their homework and made the team really work for the win. 7 – 5 was how it finished in this game.

The only team in our path to the gold medal were South Yorkshire, who we had beaten and drawn with in previous competitions. We were feeling quite confident going in to the final game, but it was obvious that the Yorkies were keen to avenge their previous defeat and even the score. And boy did they do it in style. Despite some sterling defending, the Sherrifs just couldn’t stop the power of their centre player – he showed no mercy when he was throwing that ball! Lots of bruise stopping blocks later, the South Yorkshire team came out 5 – 1 winners.

Star players Shamaila and Phil - pleased with their silver medals.

By coming home with the silver medal the Sherrifs showed that they were continuing to improve. Gold, is on the agenda for the next tournament and who knows what else after that….

If you’re interested in giving goalball a try, then the Sherrifs would welcome any new people to come along to the club training sessions. The next one is on Saturday 4th June, from 11am – 1pm at the Sutton Bonington Sports Centre. Please note that you don’t have to be visually impaired to come along and play, we welcome anyone. If you have any questions about the club or the sport, please contact either Hannah Webber (hannah.webber@nottingham.ac.uk) or Faye Dale (fayed@nrsb.org.uk).
