Student Thomas Green Wins Gold at BUCS Athletics Championships
Posted May 3, 2011on:
University of Nottingham student Thomas Green won gold in the seated discus event, at the first ever integrated BUCS Athletics Championships in Milton Keynes this weekend.
The second year Maths student who had just returned from his gold medal winning exploits at the IWAS World Junior Championships in Dubai, took to the field again to compete for his University team on Saturday.
Thomas whose main event is F32 club throwing, showed his versatility – taking on the discus against Graham Sondie from Southampton Solent University.
According to my sources, it was a hum-dinger of a competition, with Sondie throwing a massive personal best of 11.35 metres, to really push Thomas in to making some outstanding throws.
In the end, Thomas won by just 56cms, with a final distance of 11.91m – earning the University some valuable BUCS points in the process.
In total seven events for disabled athletes were included in the BUCS Championships format. This shows the great progress that BUCS is making in terms of developing fully integrated events within its programme – providing some great opportunities for disabled athletes studying in higher education in the UK.
